River Description

Buzzard Creek flows down off Grand Mesa and meets up with Plateau Creek in Collbran. The creek has nice road access for logistical purposes but seldom has enough water. This is an “easy” creeking trip. Buzzard is essentially class IV with no “big rapids”. The further upstream one goes the steeper it gets but the whole trip is a continuous series of boulders, holes, and ledges with wonderful scenery. A wooden bridge crosses some when near the end of the run and wires and fences are a constant problem with Buzzard Creek. Ranchers sometimes place debris in the stream so be careful

Shuttle: Takeout in Collburn. Take 330 E for 6 miles toward Vega Res. turn left on 64.30 rd. Put in at the river crossing.

Mid-April, 2006: ran at highwater, Plateau was 1,100. The AW gauge is not accurate. See mountainbuzz.com for accurate Plateau creek gauge. Estimate 75% of this flow. 2 trees, 1 dangerous, hard to spot with difficult eddy options. No seasonal fences at present versus 4 last year. Not a beginner run at high flows, not a fun run at low flows (<800) -- too many FU rocks in lousy places. At high flows bring a bobber boat and ride the rocket sled!

May 2005 - Encountered 4 fences, 1 wire, and one river-wide tree. Don't just bomb down this run.
