B) Witbeck Rapids (2.5 miles)

Class I-II
2.5 Miles

River Description

Jason Cowell provides:

This reach is actually much longer than the suggested 2.5 miles if you cannot secure permission to pull-out on property right after the rapids. The run consists of about i mile of decent (class 2) big-water rapids in the spring . It is a very easy stretch of boulder-bed rapids. It is a popular spring/summer canoe run.

After the rapids, the paddle out is long, 5 miles, if you have to go to the M-95 bridge (common take-out). Not only is it long, it is flat as a lake. If you can secure permission to take-out after the rapids at camps on river left, the run is well worth it. There is a set of waves at the end of the run that are a larger version of those found on other local rivers such as the Peshekee and the Paint.

Gauge Description:

At put-in, look for large boulder in the middle of the river just upstream of the beach. If has less than a half-foot showing the level is prime. More water is a faster run in many parts, but some waves get washed out. Anything below the level will often leave some plastic shavings on the rocks.
