River DescriptionThis is a nice little float for a quick get away. It normally only takes about 45 min from the time you put in until you are packing up the car at the take out. This was the first trip that my boys and I took after we got our old-town guide for Christmas 2003. That's right, we took the float at the end of December! (It is great to live in Alabama!)The highlights of the trip: 1) It is a short trip, only 45 min or so. 2) Several small feeders that are fun to paddle into and explore 3) No houses or development anyware on the float. 4) The stream is mostly free from trash and fallen trees 5) This is the first float that my boys and I did so it will always be special to me. Directions: 1) Take I-20 to exit 168 (Lincoln/Talladega), head south on 77. 2)Take the first left on 77 (this is Speedway Blvd). 3) Go to the Talladega Superspeedway and turn south between the speedway and the west parking lots (if you are coming from 77, don't pass the racetrack) (this is Jackson Trace Road). 4) Follow Jackson Trace Road south until you cross the first bridge that you come to. This should take about 5 min. This bridge crosses Choccolocco Creek. 5) As you cross the bridge look to the east and you will see Jackson Shoals, this is where the gauge is located (so they say). 6) Immediately on the south side of the bridge you will see dirt paths on both sides of the road. Take the one to the east (on your left if you came from the speedway). 5) Drive as far as you are willing and unload the canoe and carry down the path to the creek. You're ready to go. You can leave your car here if you must. The land is controlled by Alabama Power just don't block the entrance to the transformer farm. Directions to the take out: 1)South on 77 (past Speedway Blvd) about 2 miles and you will come to a pair of bridges. These are the bridges that cross Choccolocco Creek. 2) BEFORE you cross the bridge, you will see a dirt road on the right which goes down to the creek. This is where you want to park. Be sure to say hello to the folks playing horse-shoes and hanging out. For some reason this spot has become a popular spot for folks to spend the day. I don't think that I've seen it totally empty in several months, even at 10:00 on a Thursday night. Along the way: Once you put in, the flow is not strong as to prevent you from going upstream to Jackson Shoals if you want to look around there. The float is pretty easy, there is enough current that you don't have to paddle all the time. There are 3 places where you will have to navigate some class I's that are easy enough for my 7 year old to pick the course. These spots are actually small shoals so if the water level is down like in January, you may rub the bottom a few times. I have never gotten hung up where I had to get out and pull the boat. On my next trip I'll try to record a better description of them. Other than these 3 spots the water runs deep and wide. Your paddle won't hit bottom and its about 60' from shore to shore. For a little more fun, turn into one of the several tributaries and explore. My boys and I happen to love paddling narrow spots like these and getting out and exploring. As I said, this was the first float that my boys and I took in our canoe and we had a lot of fun even in December and January. We have not had a chance to make the run since the spring rains have come and the level on lake Logan-Martin has been raised. Should be even more fun! I'll post more in the next few weeks.
