Highway 92 to Cove Creek II-III
River DescriptionHugging Roberts Mountain, this tumbling creek offers some of the most delightful whitewater paddling in central Arkansas. What starts as a charming little creek run ends up offering nearly a mile of continuous Class II-III paddling as it reaches Cove Creek. From the put-in at the NE corner of the Highway 92 bridge you'll find a pleasant but twisting little creek that seems to head straight south into the face of Roberts Mountain where it will meet up with Buck Branch (0.25 mi.) and double in volume. From here the creek will provide you with a couple of shoals, a few playwaves and a just enough strainers to keep you on your toes--one or two which may require you to portage. Slowly but surely the creek will offer up increasingly more demanding obstacles -- tight turns, cross eddies, and mini-boulder gardens until you reach Drop One -- a straightforward steep little drop that offers you a nice watery horizon line as it drops 4-6 feet in just a couple of boat lengths. As the creek breaks out from Roberts Mountain the gradient picks up quickly and fairly soon Hogan's Creek will offer up an array of Class II-III shoals -- Neat Ledge, Big Tree, Drop Two and the Boulder Run--one of the longest Class II-III shoals in central Arkansas. It's mucho exilerating! Plan on having a bunch of fun. Beware! The creek is prone to tree fall, if you're new to the creek you may want to scout any of the shoals that disappear around a bend rather than confront a menancing and unexpected obstacle. Also, at the take-out, be very careful: at lower levels you might be able to pass under the bridge but at higher levels take out river right above the low water bridge--do not risk getting trapped under the bridge or in any of the strainers just upstream of the bridge. If you're up to one last little bit of play -- at the take out there are a couple of very nice waves and a short Class III shoals where Pine Creek breaks through an old low water bridge and cascades into Hogans Creek joining together to form Cove Creek.
