River DescriptionSource: Connelly and Portersfield, Appalachian Whitewater: The Northern States, 4th Edition. Text used with permission.
The Natchaug River is a short, but intense, Class IV drop-pool river in eastern Connecticut, easily reached off Interstate 86. Although the tough section is less than a mile long, the river is worthy of paddling because of its 120-feet-per-mile gradient, including a number of waterfall-type drops that challenge the accomplished boater. A nice spot for a picnic with plenty of play spots, the Natchaug River has clear, clean water and evergreen-covered ledges that keep the senses satisfied. The Natchaug provides drinking water for the Mansfield Reservoir farther downstream, and is stocked annually with trout for fishermen.
See the gauge tab above for visual and on-line correlations.

Appalachian Whitewater (see below) lists a physical gage, visible from the Rte. 198 bridge above the Diana's Pool takeout, upstream of the bridge on river right against the rock wall. 1.75 is too low, 3.0 is medium, and 5.0 is a high-water level which buries the gage.
Local paddlers often make low water runs down to 1.0 on the boaters gauge. At this level the England Road put-in is too low and boaters must carry up from the take-out to Mousetrap.

I paddled this stretch in 89 by myself at med to low levels in a squirt
boat.Got to play a few more afternoons at the bottom near the bridge.I was on
a job at Groton for the Charleston Naval Shipyard and had some afternoon
excursions.Beautiful little run in mildly populated area.Came back to Hugo Edit

There's a new gauge, the Natchaug River at Marcy Road, which should provide a better indication of flow than the Mount Hope gauge does.
4' = minimum (@1.25' on the bridge gauge)
5.5' = medium high (@2.65' on the bridge gauge)
