River Description

The Medicine Bow River is best known as a meandering river in the high plains of eastern Wyoming. However, the headwaters of the Medicine Bow River include some steep continuous whitewater. Unfortunately for most boaters, there is relatively poor access to the upper section of the river. The section describe here is the easiest to access by road. Intrepid boaters can get on higher up on FS 105 or by hiking a short distance. I would advise against boating past FS 261. The river does continue to drop for awhile past the takeout but then it becomes a meandering valley stream and there is no good access for miles.
The Medicine Bow River from FS 100 to FS 261 is a medium sized steep and continuous mountain river with long rapids, few eddies, and there is always a threat of strainers.
