Route 198 to Bassetts Bridge Road (Lower Natchaug)
Class II(III)
3 Miles
Gauge Information
River Description
The Natchaug River flows through forestland and a small section of farmland. Lack of development allows for water quality being among the cleanest in the state. Bird life is abundant and an occasional otter may be seen. This is a popular canoe route during spring and late fall.
This section of river has few holes and several wave trains. The start of the run is more intense and gradually diminishes to calmer waters near the end. At certain water levels a good surf wave forms at Bassett’s Bridge.
The put-in is on Diana’s Pool Road, Just off route 198 near the junction of route 6. After the play wave below the bridge, the river turns left then an arcing sweep to the right. Use care on this right turn as the current pushes to the left where logs often hang-up on rocks at the end of the rapid.
A large island is located about halfway down the run. All three channels are usually passable.
The take-out is on river left, upstream side of Bassett’s Bridge. The junction of route 6 and route 203 is about 1/2 mile to the East.
