Hard Creek to Little Salmon confluence

Class III-IV
1 Miles

River Description

This short class III-IV run is a typical central Idaho creek. It contains a very consisted gradiant

throughout the entire stretch. Check out the stream while driving up to the put-in, too

gain a feeling for the sections you can't see from the road. At low flows the run is slower with eddies

on shore and behind all the boulders, but at high water be ready. The run will be very fast with few

spots to stop at. The flow goes into the bushes and creates holes all over. Not knowing the run will

make the few eddies hard to see and catch. Watch for logs! Usually very clean and does not contain

any portages, however there is always wood within the stream moving around and they could block

passage.

Gauge Description:

The best gauge is a big rock upstream of the bridge
at the confluence of the Little Salmon River. Locate
the rock on river left and look at the downstream
side. If more than a foot is showing the stream is
low, and if the water is flowing over the rock its high.
Very elementry gauge, but it still gives a newcomer
an idea of flow.

Rapid Descriptions

Hard Creek Boof (Class IV, Mile 0.1)
The rapid starts just above the confluence with Hard Cr. As with most of Hazard Cr. the lead in is busy class III water, avoiding protruding rocks and small holes. The run is on the right side just a few feet from the bank, boofing off the tip of the rock. The hole below will surf a paddler for a while if missed but not too much of a concern. Finish the rapid by going around the shallow rocks below and punching another small hole.
