Gauge Description:

Pine Creek at Cedar Run is a good indicator as to whether Slate run is up. Remember that Pine has a much larger drainage basin and is longer so that it will rise and fall more slowly than Slate. If Pine is at 3.8 but has been dropping for a couple days Slate will probably not be running. You can also use accuweather to look at a topo-like map of the previous day's rainfall. You will need to go to the accumulated precipitation radar map and select Pennsylvania from a dropdown menu; I usually select 24 hour rainfall totals. Another useful tool is the the Automated Flood Warning System to look at nearby gages in Lycoming, Clinton and Tioga counties. The AFWS gages update every 15 minutes. Over an inch of rain will usually bring Slate (and nearby Cedar) runs up for a day.
