Release Information
Pacific Power and Light Company operates Boyle Powerhouse for power generation and through this operation navigable flows occur all summer.
To get the daily release information:
Most guides on the UK refer to the flow in terms of the generators that are running for the day. 1 generator refers to flows from 1200-1800 cfs where 2 generators refers to flows of 2200-3000 cfs. On the lower side of the spring island eddy there is a gauge marked off in terms of generators. Launch when the water level is at the 1 generator mark. It is possible to float the creek to Caldera at base flow however if for some reason the release does not happen you will not be able to continue to the take out.
It takes the release about 1 hour to reach the top of Caldera and consequently the same during ramp down. Keep this in mind when you take time to scout, lunch, play, or resolve incidents. Always keep an eye on the water marks on the rocks. This can give you clues to any operational changes at the power house.
2007 SUMMER OPERATION SCHEDULE
May-June 2007: Flows at or above 1500 cfs at the put-in below Boyle Powerhouse (Spring Island Put-in) should occur everyday during typical boating hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), 7 days a week.
Schedule for July 1 throughSeptember 16, 2007 .
4th of JulyHoliday (July 1-4): Raftable flows (1500 cfs at put-in) by 10:00 AM forecasted for all days. PacifiCorp recommends all river users check the water release schedule daily, to verify flows and release times.
July 5 (Thursday): Open day as needed. This is PacifiCorp's day to correct reservoir position, if needed, so that recreation and power commitments can be preserved for the balance of the week. PacifiCorp reserves the right to operate the project later in the day or as necessary.PacifiCorp recommends all river users check the water release schedule to verify flows for this day.
July 6 – September 16; Non-holiday periods (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday): The J.C. Boyle Generator unit start time will be 8:00 AM for these days. Flows of 1200 cfs or greater are typically achieved at the powerhouse, approximately three hours after the indicated generation unit start time. An additional 150-300 cfs of base flow occurs in the JC Boyle bypass reach, between the dam and the put-in. It is recommended that all boating parties check the BLM staff gauge at the put-in to verify actual flow. Recreational users should recognize that the cfs values listed in the Hourly Estimated Flows Table are an average for the hour listed (i.e., the value for 11:00is an average of the flows occurring between 10:00 and 11:00). Therefore, when ramping is in progress, actual turbine flow on the hour indicated may be approximately 150-300 cfs higher than the value shown.
July 6 – September 16; Non-holiday periods ( Wednesday): Open day as needed. This is PacifiCorp's day to correct reservoir position, if needed, so that recreation and power commitments can be preserved for the balance of the week. PacifiCorp reserves the right to operate the project later in the day or as necessary.PacifiCorp recommends all river users check the water release schedule to verify flows for these days.
Labor Day Weekend Sept 1-3: (Saturday - Monday): Raftable flows (1500 cfs at the put-in) by 10:00 AM forecasted for all three days. PacifiCorp recommends all river users check the water release schedule daily, to verify flows and release times.
Summer 2007 J.C. Boyle Maintenance Outage Schedule: There are currently no planned maintenance outages at the J.C. Boyle project for July and August 2006. However, there is always the possibility of a mechanical failure causing unplanned outages. Any unplanned outages at J.C. Boyle could impact the rafting schedule. Check the water release schedule daily, to see if unplanned outages have any effect on rafting.
The intent in providing the above information is to provide raftable flows, as listed. However, if difficulties arise in the power supply situation, PacifiCorp reserves the right to operate the project later in the day or as necessary. PacifiCorp recommends all river users check the water release schedule daily, to verify flows and release times.
