Concept: This column will highlight a section of river that may not have the fame of the well known paddling destinations. That’s it—very simple. For some writers, their favorite section will be a backyard creek, for others, a local play run—regardless, we want to know why you value this stretch of river. In most cases, we are want to hear about runs that have a long season and are accessible to a majority of the serious paddling community (Class III+ or easier). Tell us why you’re glad to have this resource in your neck of the woods.
Also, keep in mind that most readers will not have experiencegd this section before, so don’t foret details that you might tend to take for granted (i.e. water temperature, shuttle difficulty, river traffic, hospitality—or lack of it—in local paddling and non-paddling communities, typical weather during the season). We recommend against describing each rapid. We are not trying to create a guidebook, but rather an appetizing description that will make others appreciate one of your favorite rivers as much as you do. Think of writing an installment of “The Locals’ Favorite” as an essay titled: “Why I love river X….”
