Gauge Information
River Description
This tiny stream drops off the Blue Ridge and runs beside the road that leads to Wintergreen ski resort. The South Rock needs A LOT of rain to go off. Park well off the road, along the shoulder of Beech Grove Rd. (Rt.664), below the entrance to Wintergreen. After a few small boulder drops, you'll be at the top of the first slide. The second slide follows soon thereafter and is even better. After that there is more technical boulder-bashing down a very narrow streambed all the way to Moses Hughes Rd. (Rt.715) near Rockfish Center. Wear elbow pads and watch out for wood! Bash away!
NOTE: Mandatory portage: There is now a new wooden footbridge somewhere below the slides. The bridge is low to the water and looks like it would need to be portaged. There aren't many eddies above it, so note the bridges location from the road so that you don't end up stuffed underneath!
Take out at the Moses Hughes/Rt.715 bridge but please note the river-wide fence (strainer) hung underneath the bridge - you cannot see the fence from the road. Check this out before you put-on.
The best whitewater on this creek is definitely in the first half, but please continue down to Moses Hughes ,or another legitimate takeout, and respect private property at all times. The whole run doesn't take very long at all anyway. Think Rain!
