Marl Creek #2, VA

Disclaimer

roadside Rt. 706

Class IV-V
0.2 Miles

River Description

The Marl Creek "teacups" are a very short set of drops east of Lexington, VA. (Do not travel far for this little creek - this is a novelty run.) There are several streams called "Marl Creek" in the area. This one is near the intersection of Routes 706 and 608 (South River Road), between Riverside and South River, VA. "Marl" is a type of rock common in this part of the Shenandoah Valley, and is the same crumbly stuff that makes Tufa Falls on Hays Creek. It is brittle and changes often after floods or freeze/thaw cycles.

The "Teacups" have changed over the past few years and have become less steep. There are still a few 8-10 foot drops. These little waterfalls drop onto very shallow rock so bring a good boof and a padded seat. Access is an issue so you may need to ask permission from nearby landowners before putting-on.
