JANESVILLE (WKOW-TV Channel 27) -- The Janesville Police Department says a kayaker was rescued in the Rock River Saturday.

They say the 27-year-old man he was kayaking the river on his way to Northern Illinois when his kayak tipped over near the Monterey Dam around 3 p.m.

Authorities say he became lodged in the area and the current swept him just south of the railroad overpass.

Officers shut down traffic on Center Avenue and made several attempts to reach the man, but the current was too strong.

The Fire Department deployed a boat and were able to pull the man from the river.

He was wearing a personal flotation device and was treated and released from the hospital.
