Tacoma man drowns in McKenzie River

FINN ROCK — A 63-year-old Tacoma man drowned early Sunday afternoon on the McKenzie River near Finn Rock, the Lane County Sheriff’s office reported.

The office’s Marine Patrol, with assistance from McKenzie and Springfield fire department medics, responded to a report at 12:14 p.m. of an overturned drift boat with several people in the water. Three of the boat’s four occupants were able to rescue themselves and reach shore, deputies said.

McKenzie Fire crew members searched the area and was able to recover Sheldon Cross from the water. Cross was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a life jacket, deputies said.
