BATTLE CREEK — Two women are safe tonight after a Sunday afternoon water rescue on the Elkhorn River near Battle Creek. Battle Creek’s Assistant Fire Chief Mike Goodwater says that the women were in separate kayaks when they were overturned after colliding with debris and were believed to be in the water clinging to trees for up to an hour and a half.

One woman was able to make a 911 call just after 2:30 p.m. that sent 20 fire fighters to the scene. Officials say that the women were lucky to have been able to make a 911 call. They say that the heavy rains make the river more dangerous and that wearing life jackets is always recommended. Norfolk Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.
