Witnesses told SCSO that 61-year-old Leif Convers Hansen of Mt. Shasta was heading down a steep trail with his kayak, trying to reach an access point on the Sacramento River east of the Box Canyon Dam. Investigators believe that Hansen slipped on the trail, began sliding down a steep decline, then fell over the edge of a cliff.
SCSO said that a companion of Hansen's and a local doctor rushed to where Hansen landed along the riverbank, trying to tend his wounds and deliver CPR.
"Despite a prolonged and heroic attempt to revive the man, his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful and the victim succumbed to his injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene," the agency said.
Deputies and the SCSO Search & Rescue team responded around 5:30 p.m., finding out that the doctor and EMS teams had already pronounced Hansen dead.
"On behalf of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the decedent, his family, and friends in the aftermath of his tragic death," said Sheriff Jon Lopey. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Hansen’s companions and commend them for the extraordinary efforts to rescue and revive him after his fall."
