New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham Vetoes Gila Diversion Funding
In her campaign, newly elected Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham laid out a plan to end work on the Gila River Diversion Project. This past Friday she took great strides towards that promise by vetoing $1.69M in New Mexico Unit funding requested by the Interstate Stream Commission for Gila diversion planning and design.
The Gila is one of the region’s most iconic and wild rivers. This veto goes a long way to end the costly and environmentally destructive diversion project. The project makes no sense to taxpayers, paddlers, and the communities that surround the Gila, who depend on the recreation economy.
Please visit our friends at the Gila Conservation Coalition to thank Governor Lujan Grisham. We encourage the Governor to take the necessary final steps to end work on this diversion project.
