Boaters Win Back the Mongaup!

American Whitewater is pleased to announce that public access to the Mongaup River is officially restored! Mirant New York called us this morning to let us know that they would once again be leaving the gates open on days when there are no scheduled releases.

This past spring, Mirant began denying access to the river as a reaction to a homeland security memo published by FERC. In response, AW has written Mirant letters, filed comments to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and participated in a recreation study on the Mongaup. We recieved written comments from 25 paddlers in response to our recent web page solicitation and passed on each of these to Mirant.

The restored access meets the needs of many of the boaters that commented and we hope that Mirant will consider additional enhancements based on our comments.

American Whitewater would like to recognize Mirant's responsiveness to our requests and thank them for reconsidering their access policy in order to better share the Mongaup River with the public.
