Upper American River Project (CA) Scheduled Recreational Flow Days Confirmed
American Whitewater has confirmed scheduled recreational flow days with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and the managing agencies. Each year we have license required consultations with SMUD starting in February of each year to collaboratively schedule tentative release dates and proactively address management issues such as COVID 19. 2021 is forecasted to be a DRY water year type which means a mixed bag of news for flow days on the Upper American River Project.
First, below Chili Bar on the South Fork American we can expect the same 3-hour flows from the past month until Memorial Day which is 1300 cfs 9 am – noon Mon, Tues & Fri and 1500 cfs 9 am- noon Sat & Sun. After Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day we gain one more flow day on Thursdays at 1300 cfs 9 am – noon.
The bad news is there will be no scheduled recreational flows on Slab Creek which requires at least a Below Normal water year type. The good news is there will be 3 days of recreational flows on South Fork Silver Creek below Ice House so mark your calendars as follows:
May 1, 2 & 8
10 am – 3 pm
For the Ice House release, USFS personal are required to wear masks on federal land and ask that paddlers continue to employ best practices for COVID 19 including wearing masks in crowded parking lots and during shuttle set-up.
One caveat to voice is if we see no more storm events in the coming months, the water year type can change to Critically Dry which will reduce the flow days on Chili Bar and Ice House. American Whitewater will keep you posted! In the meantime keep up your rain dances!
