Where: Original channel upstream from Xcel Energy’s Jim Falls Hydro Project on the Chippewa River. A spillway gate will be opened so peak flows occur at the old bridge area, midway down the channel.

When: Whitewater flow releases will occur four times annually. This year's dates are: July 14, 28 and August 11, 19 between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Description: This river segment is characterized as Class II and Class III pool-drop rapids, requiring an intermediate to advanced skill level. Boaters should be aware that there are inherent risks associated with whitewater boating and are encouraged to use common sense at all times. This segment is also recognized as an important lake sturgeon spawning area and the dark shadows of the prehistoric fish can be viewed throughout the warm water season.

Directions: Xcel Energy’s Jim Falls Hydro Project is located at the junction of County Highway Y and Highway 178, between Chippewa Falls and Cornell, Wis. The put-in location is upstream river right, in a pool at the old bridge. The take-out location is downstream river right, approximately 300 yards from the County Highway Y bridge. Parking is available at the put-in location.

Sign In: Please be sure to sign in at the put-in point as use is being monitored for further evaluation.
