Blasting underway for new Whitechuck River Bridge

Today through Sunday contractors will be on site to conduct blasting operations associated with the construction of a new bridge across the Whitechuck River. This bridge will replace the one washed out in the October 2003 floods and will provide access to the Whitechuck Launch on the Sauk Wild and Scenic River.

Blasting is currently scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Paddlers planning to be out on the Sauk this weekend should be aware that a safety perimeter will be established prior to blasting operations scheduled to occur each day which could result in some minor delays. Paddlers who launch upstream on the Sauk River and float down to the Whitechuck River confluence should be especially cautious and pay attention to instructions from safety personnel so as not to inadvertently float into the blast zone.

The river will be open to float traffic but boaters are asked to exercise caution and respect the instructions from contractors who are working to implement this project while continuing to provide access to public lands and waters.

Any questions should be directed to Phil Kincare (360-865-5700 x263), River Manager with the US Forest Service.
