Position: Northeast Stewardship Director

Description: The Northeast Stewardship Director will represent American Whitewater in strategically selected regional river conservation and access issues.  These issues include hydropower project management, public land and river management, community planning / river access, and policy issues that affect the region. This highly diverse workload will require review and comment on technical and legal documents, participation in multi-party negotiations, and significant collaboration with volunteers and partner organizations. 

In addition to the direct program work, the Northeast Director will be expected to communicate their work to AW members via the AW website, AW journal, in-person presentations, and reports. The Northeast Director will also work with other AW staff and board members to ensure the sustainable funding of the regional program.    

The Northeast Director will report to American Whitewater’s National Stewardship Director, and will benefit from significant support and collaboration with AW staff, board members, and active regional volunteers.  American Whitewater provides a positive work environment for individuals that are self-motivated, creative, and passionate about making a difference.

The Northeast Director will be a new half-time position with an initial term of two years, with possibility of additional hours-per-week and extensions based on funding. The location of the position is negotiable within the Northeastern US (North of but not including PA), and the Director will work from a home office. Pay is hourly and based on experience.

Skills and Requirements:

• Passion for rivers and their responsible enjoyment
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to provide analysis of information from a variety of sources
• In-depth knowledge of Northeast whitewater rivers, paddling, and related issues
• Strong commitment to a collaborative team-driven approach
• Self-motivation and ability to work independently and think critically
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in science, policy, law, or related field
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and general computer use.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
