Recently American Whitewater provided a statement for the Mokelumne River documenting the outstandingly remarkable recreational values of the reach for California State Senate Bill 1199.  This bill proposes to designate 37 miles of the Mokelumne River as State Wild & Scenic affording the watershed many of the same protections of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System. One of the outstandingly remarkable recreational values highlighted in American Whitewater’s statement is the Annual Mokelumne River Races hosted by Sierra Club Loma Prieta Paddlers an American Whitewater Affiliate Club.

Registration for the 36th Annual Moke Races on September 13th and 14th is now live.  Come see for yourself the beauty of the Mokelumne River watershed and enjoy a weekend of friendly competition, camaraderie and of course paddling! To register and get more information on the downriver race, the slalom race and lodging in the area visit www.mokeraces.com.

In the meantime, American Whitewater will continue to provide advocacy support for the sponsors of California State Senate Bill 1199, the Honorable State Senator Loni Hancock, Friends of the River and Foothill Conservancy.  Thus far the bill has passed the State Senate and the first Assembly Committee vote from the Natural Resources Committee but faces another challenge this August when it advances to a tougher committee vote from the Assembly Appropriations Committee and then to a full Assembly vote.

It is American Whitewater’s hope that paddlers will soon be racing on the California State Wild and Scenic Mokelumne River!
