American Whitewater wants to raise its paddles to recognize Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society President Ryan Galway as its Volunteer of the Month. Ryan has been an essential volunteer for AW in the northeast, taking a leadership role in efforts to restore flows and improve recreation at hydro dams and working to preserve threatened rivers. Most recently, Ryan was the lead AW volunteer coordinating the whitewater boating study on the Little Androscoggin River in Auburn, ME, where a hydro dam has eliminated all recreation opportunity. From his participation in multiple flow studies in the region to his support for efforts to protect recreation opportunities at the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument, Ryan has always stepped up to help when help was needed.

Ryan can often be found in his open boat on Maine’s whitewater with the PPCS crew, but he’s just as likely to be on a whitewater or flatwater adventure with his wife Shweta and their two kids. For Ryan, boating is truly a family adventure.

In recognition of Ryan Galway’s volunteer efforts, he will be receiving a gift certificate from Kokatat!
