American Whitewater is seeking an iOS developer to extend American Whitewater's existing iOS application (written in Swift). At the heart of our online river guide app is innovative crowdsourcing, rich mapping and photography, river safety advice, and engagement with conservation initiatives. An interest or experience in river recreation is a plus for this project, but not required.

This project will require interacting with notification APIs, HTTP APIs, mapping APIs, authentication APIs, and camera APIs. The backend is PHP/Laravel. Time-frame is 16 months with a start date as soon as possible. Experience with Android (Java) would be a plus and could lead to an expanded scope of work. A link to the existing app source code is available upon request.

The American Whitewater apps currently allow whitewater paddlers to find rivers near them, view them on a map, assess flow levels, read a basic description of the river, and link through to the American Whitewater website for the river. The developers of the current app are available for consultation. The next phase, which is the subject of this request for applications, is to allow crowdsourced updates to the American Whitewater river web pages including comments, hazards, flow information, and photos through the mobile device. We also propose to enhance mapping capabilities by replacing the underlying tiles with AW whitewater-specific tiles. Lastly the project includes the design and build out of the ability to read the newly publicly submitted data via the apps.

Please send inquiries and resumes to Kevin Colburn, kevin(at)americanwhitewater(dot)org with the subject line "App Development." Following introductory resume review and conversations, technical specifications will be provided and bids will be requested of competitive and qualified applicants. American Whitewater is an equal opportunity employer.
