Stonycreek Flow Study

American Whitewater is working with the Bens Creek Canoe Club and the Cambria Somerset Authority to secure recreational releases on the Stonycreek River near Johnstown, Pa. The CSA requested that we undertake several studies on the economic and ecological effects of releases, as well as a study to determine the amount of water required to provide acceptable and optimal whitewater recreation opportunities. American Whitewater has agreed to conduct this final study. American Whitewater has assisted with the design and implementation of dozens of similar controlled whitewater flow studies all across the country. Because there is not presently a release structure by which the flows of this reach can be controlled, we have decided to conduct this study by surveying boaters with historical knowledge of various flows in the Stonycreek canyon.
If you are familiar with the Stonycreek and it's different flows please take a minute to fill out the survey below. AW will compile the results of this study and submit them to the Cambria Somerset Authority. The data we get will be used to determine the size of the release structure that will be installed in the Quemahoning Dam. We will also use the results of this study to advise CSA as to optimum flows and the best time of the year to have recreational releases.
For the purposes of this study please consider only the run through the Stonycreek canyon. Traditionally this is the reach from Faustwell Bridge, or Showers rapid to the Carpenters Park take-out. This is the only whitewater run on the Stonycreek that would be enhanced by releases from the Quemahoning Dam.
The study refers to three flows. These are the levels that realistically could be achieved, in light of the possible release structure and the water available in the dam. We refer to three different gauges. Faustwell Bridge is the traditional put in just upstream of the confluence with Shade Creek. Carpenters Park Bridge is the traditional take-out just upstream of the confluence with Paint Creek. Ferndale is the USGS gauge available over the internet. Whichever gauge you are familiar with, please convert your flow to cfs in Ferndale so there will be no confusion about your answers.
This questionnaire will run for approximately two weeks. We are asking the boating public to pass the word about it. If you have friends that you have paddled the Stony with, please refer them to this site. The more responses we get the more valid our results will be. We will publish the results of this study along with further developments in our quest to restore the Stonycreek River.
