Callahan is a steep technical Class V adventure in a walled-in canyon with blue water and light colored rock. Be careful, it is easy to get boxed into the canyons. It is recommended that would be paddlers first hike up the historic trail that begins on the main road just downstream of the heart of the canyon at a road pull out, and conduct extensive scouting throughout the run. The lower canyon has a risky must-run Class V rapid in it. The upper and lower canyons both have multiple places where a poorly placed log or log jam could make portage and egress virtually impossible. This is one of the most committing runs in the region, and may at times be physically impassable.
