Generation Gap is probably most often run by those coming off of Royal Gorge, the upstream section. Less paddled than the downstream Giant Gap, Generation Gap offers paddlers the full Californian experience; a stout hike in, remote wilderness, and some unique rapids.
Put in
Several access options exist; the Beacroft Trailhead, and the Mumford Bar Trailhead.
As of recent (2026), approach beta is quite sporadic. Most recent reports indicate that the 4 mile long Mumford Bar trail is passable, yet with a large number of trees down (and poison oak). Not much is known about the Beacroft Trailhead, or the current conditions of the trail down to the river from that access point.
Take Out
Boaters can stop at Euchre Bar and hike 2 miles and 1,700 feet up a trail to Euchre Bar Trailhead, but this forces a 50 mile shuttle that takes an hour and a half each direction. Most boaters continue on through Giant Gap to exit at Mineral Bar on Colfax-Iowa Hill Rd. This shuttle is about 30 miles and takes about an hour each way. Others continue on through the Chamberlain Falls section to Colfax-Foresthill Rd, which reduces the shuttle to 28 miles and less than an hour each way.

Where the trip starts just downstream of Tadpole Creek on river left. Accessed by trail.
Alternate put in, most recently reported in March of 2026 to be passable, though with many downed trees and a lot of poison oak.

First rapid about 100 yards downstream of the put in.

Gravel bar campsite, river right. Good for those who get a late start and can't make it past Dream Gap on day 1.

A significant set of rapids, marked by tightening walls.

Checked this one off the list, so to speak. Hiked in the Mumford Bar trail, which was overgrown and rife with poison oak. Low water for generation gap meant portaging a few within dream gap. First gorge was definitely the best quality. Thankful no wood in the portage (since i ran it on my head).
Camped somewhere above dream gap on river right.

Has anyone hiked into this run in 2012 or 2013? The information floating around the web seems to indicate the Beacroft trail is overgrown and nearly impassable.
