River Description
Older canoe/river guidebooks listed a segment starting in/near Glidden, using access either at Highway 13 bridge or public landing on Fishback Road. Frankly, this nearly doubles the trip, and (best we can tell from satellite views) does not appear to add any meaningful whitewater. We have therefore recommended an alternate put-in at Shanagolden.
Rapids include: Swann & McKain Rapids (II), unnamed half-mile, below Shanagolden Bridge (II), Cedar Rapids (II).
Take-out is at Campgrounds at Stockfarm Bridge.

River Features
Swamps and Meanders
Other sources suggest putting in at Glidden. Frankly, from satellite views, it appears the overriding impression of the 10 miles from Glidden to Shanagolden is likely to be of swamps and meanders. Zooming down to the closest view, I cannot discern any real rapids (not to say there aren't any, just that none appear obvious).
(If you have done this stretch, and have information, photos, or video which speaks to the contrary, we'd love to be corrected!)
For this reason, it is hard to imagine why anyone might recommend putting in anywhere above Shanagolden.
Put In
Drainage: 133 sq.mi.
Drainage area at our listed put-in is approximately 133 sq.mi. (as calculated via USGS StreamStats Beta software). By our listed take-out, it has increased to 197 square miles (48% increase).
Island / rips
Near Shanagolden, a fair-sized island will be encountered. There appear to be (perhaps) some minor rock-garden disturbances leading toward this island, and a slight increase in action as you pass the island (particularly in the river-left channel).
Bay Road
If parking can be found (roadside, or with permission of property owners nearby) with convenient access to river near this bridge, it would make a much better alternative for access.
Starting almost immediately downstream there is a fine stretch of rapids. It appears to start out class II, then diminish to class I-II, lasting nearly three-quarters of a mile.
Take Out
Private Bridge
After a sharp right-hand horseshoe bend (a 'U-turn' of the river), another horeshoe bend to the left encounters a private bridge (to a house on river-left) and a very brief rock-garden pitch to a pool below.
Minor rock-garden
