Lime Creek

First gorge of lime is a unique low volume creek run in the Animas River Watershed. It is also one of the easier class five runs in Durango and is a great stepping stone to harder runs in the area. It is hard to catch this run with enough water, the put in is close to the headwaters so you are more likely to catch good flows in the evening. This canyon has some extremely boxed in rapids and one of them, s turn is good to scout on your shuttle drive up, as portaging would require ascending out of the canyon, see pin for approximate location of scout from the road. Upon putting in, one mile of warmup slides and ledges (one perhaps worthy of a quick scout) will bring you to an obviously large horizon line that is adrenaline falls. Right is best for scouting this drop and left is best for portaging (though a throw and go is possible on the right). Adrenaline is a sweet 25 foot plug. There is a dangerous pocket on the right that forms at higher flows where close calls have occurred, you can set safety on the rocks river right at the end of the pool, otherwise the pool is clean and deep.

Below Adrenaline low angle slides and a sweet five footer being you into a large canyon, there is one portage in this section a ways below the small falls, portage right. Beyond this portage a ways is another obvious rapid, s turn which is a tight twisting slot may be possible to scout on a gravel bar left depending on flow. A ways below this is an off vertical ten footer called Dragons Back that is usually run down the right and is straightforward. Another 1/2 mile of boogie will lead you to the takeout.
