River Description

ACCESS: Just a few short paddle strokes from the parking lot of the Museum of History and Industry. Also accessible from the University of Washington's Waterfront Activity Center.

To reach the museum parking lot:

From Interstate 5 take State Route 520 (exit 168B); Exit at Montlake Boulevard; Go through stoplight one block to 24th Avenue East. Turn left into the Museum of History and Industry driveway. Follow road to parking lot.

From westbound State Route 520, take the Lake Washington Boulevard exit; take a right on Lake Washington Boulevard; and turn right on 24th Avenue East into the Museum of History and Industry parking lot.

It isn't whitewater, but it's a popular training site with the Seattle area slalom crowd. This is the place to go for your flatwater gate work within the city. You'll find approximately 25 gates suspended from the west end of the SR 520 bridge in a corner of the lake near the University of Washington Arboretum. It's also the site of the Arboretum Classic held in February, an informal race organized by the League of Northwest Whitewater Racers to kick off the annual slalom racing season.
