There are a couple nice stretches of rapids above Newcomb which are good for shorter trips. First, one can walk up to Henderson Lake, paddle over the dam, and enjoy a short creeky section down a bit past the parking lot. Another option is to put in at the first bridge on the way to Tahawus. Great Class II-III eventually mellows out near Newcomb, but with careful scouting in advance, one can avoid the flatwater by take out near the intersection of the Blue Ridge Road and Rt 28N (43.951457, -74.069597)
