SUMMARY:NF Feather River - Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Rock Creek Scheduled Recreation Flows Return to the North Fork Feather in 2026\nThe Rock Creek Reach of the North Fork Feather River continues to provide some of California’s most reliable summer and fall whitewater opportunities thanks to recreation releases secured through the relicensing of the Cresta Hydroelectric Project. Prior to the 2001 license\, flows in this bypass reach were largely diverted for hydropower generation\, leaving only minimal instream flows and making boating opportunities rare and unpredictable. \nThat changed through the efforts of American Whitewater\, Chico PaddleHeads\, and Shasta Paddlers\, who spent years advocating for improved river conditions and dedicated recreation releases. Today\, the Rock Creek Reach supports dependable boating opportunities throughout much of the year\, with scheduled recreation releases supplementing the enhanced base flows that now support daily boating on portions of the run. \nThe Rock Creek Reach offers something for a wide range of paddlers. The Rodgers Flat section provides enjoyable Class III boating\, while the Tobin and Lobin sections deliver some of the most exciting Class IV and Class V whitewater in Northern California. With Highway 70 paralleling much of the river\, multiple access points allow paddlers to customize trips and run individual sections or the entire reach. \nScheduled Recreation Release Dates\nThe following recreation releases are scheduled for 2026. Flow targets are measured below Rock Creek Dam and are intended to provide quality boating opportunities throughout the reach. \nJune 27–28\, 2026 \n\nSaturday: 1\,100 cfs\nSunday: 900 cfs\n\nJuly 25–26\, 2026 \n\nSaturday: 1\,100 cfs\nSunday: 900 cfs\n\nAugust 22–23\, 2026 \n\nSaturday: 1\,100 cfs\nSunday: 900 cfs\n\nSeptember 26–27\, 2026 (FEATHER FEST) \n\nSaturday: 900 cfs\nSunday: 900 cfs\n\nBoaters should always verify flows before traveling\, as operational or system conditions can occasionally affect release schedules. By 9 a.m. on Saturdays\, flows will be increased to the listed cfs before starting to reduce at 3 p.m. to 900 cfs. On Sundays\, flows will be at 900 cfs until 2 p.m. when flows will be gradually reduced \nWhether you’re looking for roadside Class III laps on Rodgers Flat or challenging Class IV-V whitewater through Tobin and Lobin\, the 2026 recreation release schedule provides several excellent opportunities to experience one of California’s premier dam-controlled whitewater runs.

SUMMARY:Fox River Whitewater Releases (WI)
DESCRIPTION:Whitewater boating opportunities are made available on the Kaukauna reach of the Fox River on the third and fourth Saturdays in June\, the last Saturday in September\, and the first Saturday in October if inflow to the project exceeds 3000 cfs. For a release to occur whitewater boaters need to notify Kaukauna by email or telephone no more than 30 days prior to and no later than 10:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time the Friday prior to a scheduled release for flows to be released into the river channel for whitewater boating. \nWhitewater releases are provided in accordance with the following flow criteria: \n\nNo release is required if the river flows calculated at Rapide Croche are below 3\,000 cfs.\nWhen river flows at Rapide Croche are between 3\,000 to 6\,000 cfs\, all flows will be diverted to the bypass\, and Badger Hydro will be shut down.\nWhen river flows are above 6\,000 cfs at Rapide Croche\, Badger Hydro will have one or two units on line in an attempt to maintain a 6\,000 cfs release to the bypass.\nOne to two days prior to the scheduled release\, KU will make an estimate of flows for the weekend\, in consultation with the USACE\, and determine which of the above scenarios will apply. This information will be posted on our website.\nKU will not monitor the releases with an on-site presence.\n\nTo make a request\, the email notification must be sent to both ops@ku-wi.org and zmoureau@ku-wi.org to request the release. If you choose to make a telephone notification\, you must call KU System Operations at (920) 766-5988 and select option 4.

SUMMARY:Jim Falls Whitewater Releases (WI)
DESCRIPTION:Jim Falls whitewater releases are scheduled recreational flow events on the Chippewa River at the Jim Falls Hydroelectric Project near Jim Falls\, Wisconsin. On six select dates through the summer\, gates are opened to provide peak flows of approximately 650 cfs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, creating a rare opportunity to boat this 0.75-mile Class II–III pool-drop reach of the Chippewa River below the old County Y bridge. Throughout April and May\, higher base flows of about 850 cfs are also maintained to support lake sturgeon and other fish species. Access is via Old Abe Wayside Park for the put-in\, with an established take-out and parking downstream. \nThese releases exist because of advocacy and collaboration during the project’s federal relicensing process. American Whitewater played an important role in securing scheduled boating flows through the Lower Chippewa River settlement agreement filed with FERC in 2001. The release program remains an annual operating requirement of the Jim Falls Project and was expanded in 2016 to include additional events\, ensuring continued whitewater recreation opportunities on this reach. \nIf you take advantage of these opportunities\, please be sure to sign in at the put‐in location and include any comments you might have. These sheets will be used to evaluate participation and help make informed decision regarding future flow releases. Your cooperation is appreciated.

SUMMARY:South Fork Silver Creek below Icehouse Reservoir (CA) - Scheduled Release
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Upper American River Project (UARP) creates a mix of scheduled and opportunistic whitewater opportunities on South Fork Silver Creek below Ice House Reservoir —one of California’s most unique\, dam-controlled Class IV runs. For boaters willing to track conditions and stay flexible\, the combination of planned releases and snowmelt-driven pulse flows can significantly expand the season. \nScheduled Whitewater Recreation Flows\nUnder the UARP license\, South Fork Silver Creek receives a set of scheduled recreation releases\, typically timed for late spring & early summer when access conditions are reliable and demand is high. These flows are designed to provide predictable boating opportunities\, allowing paddlers to plan trips in advance and coordinate logistics. \nThese scheduled releases are a direct outcome of years of advocacy\, negotiation\, and monitoring. As reflected in ongoing implementation and reporting\, whitewater boating on the Ice House reach (South Fork Silver Creek) is now a recognized and managed recreational use\, with consistent participation and generally positive boater feedback on flow conditions. \nScheduled Recreation Release Dates from 10 am to 3 pm\n\n\nJune 6\, 2026 – ~400 cfs \n\n\nJune 13\, 2026 – ~500 cfs \n\n\nJune 20\, 2026 – ~500 cfs \n\n\nJune 27\, 2026 – ~400 cfs  \n\n\nLog Hazards Report for Ice House Run 2026

SUMMARY:Upper Nantahala and Cascades Releases (NC)
DESCRIPTION:Each year Duke Energy releases various ideal boating flows into the Cascades and Upper sections of the Nantahala River on eight days each year: one weekend in April\, one weekend in September\, and four weekday afternoons in the summer. American Whitewater and our affiliate clubs negotiated these releases in the early 2000’s and meet with stakeholders each year to schedule the releases and address any issues. These releases provide water in a Class III+ section and a Class V section of the Nantahala River. Parking is an issue\, so paddlers are encouraged to use a shuttle service or park well off the the paved road. The April Saturday release is at 250cfs\, The April Sunday release is at 350cfs\, the summer afternoons are at 250cfs\, The September Saturday is at 300cfs\, and the September Sunday release is at 425cfs from 10am to 3pm\, and 250cfs from 3 to 5pm.

SUMMARY:New River Dries Release (Tentative)(WV)
DESCRIPTION:American Whitewater and the local outfitters negotiated a series of 2 releases in March and 7 releases in late June through August each year. These releases are scheduled\, but require dam inflows to be between 3\,800 and 12\,500 cfs or they will be cancelled and rescheduled\, but not beyond the last weekend in August. Releases are between 2\,200 and 2\,500 cfs\, which provides a relatively low flow but enjoyable trip for experienced whitewater boaters. Check https://www.safewaters.com/facility/hawks-nest for details. This protocol might be improved in the future.
