SUMMARY:TSRA Swiftwater Rescue
DESCRIPTION:This TSRA Swiftwater Rescue clinic will include indoor/outdoor classroom instruction\, shore and river skills and realistic scenarios. Successful completion of this course will prepare you to self-rescue and aid in the rescue of others in whitewater environments.  This course is designed to teach basic swiftwater rescue techniques where limited personnel and/or safety gear is available. Our instructors have over 50 years of combined experience teaching whitewater paddling and swiftwater rescue. They’ve provided instruction to hundreds of individuals and many paddling clubs in Tennessee and Kentucky as well as training Tennessee and National Park Service Rangers\, firefighters\, other first responders and many more. \nRegistration fee includes: tent camping onsite.  Student guests $25/night to camp during the clinic.  There is limited bunk space for an additional cost to those participants seeking indoor space. To book email: Jim McCool at wwseal@yahoo.com. Breakfast and lunch is the responsibility of participants. We will provide dinner on Sat night only.

SUMMARY:NF Mokelumne Tiger Creek (CA) Flows
DESCRIPTION:The Tiger Creek Section of the North Fork Mokelumne River has annually-scheduled releases as a condition of Pacific Gas & Electric’s Mokelumne River Hydroelectric Project. These releases are scheduled each year by American Whitewater and partners. \n2026 Recreational Releases\n \nMay 23rd and 24th\nMay 30th and 31st\nJune 5th and  7th\nJune 12th and 14th \nThe frequency and volume of the releases is contingent upon a given year’s Water Year Type as determined by the year’s Snow Surveys\, represented in the Department of Water Resources’ Water Supply Bulletin 120\, published each month of the Spring and finalized in May. 2026 is a Below Normal Water Year\, which affords 8 days scheduled between April 1st and June 15th and with a flow of 700cfs. \nNote: Extremely poor snowpack during this Water Year may impact PG&E’s ability to meet the 700cfs minimum release during the June Release dates on two consecutive days. For this reason\, please note that the June releases are Fri/Sun rather than Sat/Sun. Releases are a minimum flow and observed flows in the reach may be higher. Additional boating opportunities may occur outside of this boating release schedule. \nPhoto Credit: Forest Kan\nPaddler: Justin Macklin

SUMMARY:South Fork Silver Creek below Icehouse Reservoir (CA) - Scheduled Release
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Upper American River Project (UARP) creates a mix of scheduled and opportunistic whitewater opportunities on South Fork Silver Creek below Ice House Reservoir —one of California’s most unique\, dam-controlled Class IV runs. For boaters willing to track conditions and stay flexible\, the combination of planned releases and snowmelt-driven pulse flows can significantly expand the season. \nScheduled Whitewater Recreation Flows\nUnder the UARP license\, South Fork Silver Creek receives a set of scheduled recreation releases\, typically timed for late spring & early summer when access conditions are reliable and demand is high. These flows are designed to provide predictable boating opportunities\, allowing paddlers to plan trips in advance and coordinate logistics. \nThese scheduled releases are a direct outcome of years of advocacy\, negotiation\, and monitoring. As reflected in ongoing implementation and reporting\, whitewater boating on the Ice House reach (South Fork Silver Creek) is now a recognized and managed recreational use\, with consistent participation and generally positive boater feedback on flow conditions. \nScheduled Recreation Release Dates from 10 am to 3 pm\n\n\nJune 6\, 2026 – ~400 cfs \n\n\nJune 13\, 2026 – ~500 cfs \n\n\nJune 20\, 2026 – ~500 cfs \n\n\nJune 27\, 2026 – ~400 cfs  \n\n\nLog Hazards Report for Ice House Run 2026

SUMMARY:West Fork Tuckasegee Gorge Release
DESCRIPTION:These releases provide 250 cfs in the Class IV+ West Fork of the Tuckasegee below Lake Glenville. Paddlers hike in from the reservoir on a well established trail\, put in below several large unrunnable waterfalls\, and navigate several miles of Class IV+ whitewater. These releases were negotiated by American Whitewater and our affiliate paddling clubs in the early 2000’s\, and are provided by Duke Energy as part of their federal dam license. Releases are from 10-4pm. Note that this run flows through private property\, and paddlers should not exit the stream bed.

SUMMARY:West Fork Tuckasegee Gorge Release (NC)
DESCRIPTION:Each year Duke Energy releases ideal recreation flows of 250cfs into the Class IV+(V) West Fork Tuckasegee’s steep gorge on seven days. These releases were negotiated by American Whitewater and affiliate paddling clubs in the early 2000’s\, along with the access trail and parking areas\, over the course of a five year process. Each year we meet to plan the next year’s releases and address any issues. Paddlers park at a trailhead on Lake Glenville\, hike down a steep trail to the base of two massive waterfalls\, and paddle 5.6 miles of steep slides\, drops\, and rapids in a gorge comprised of private lands.

SUMMARY:Upper Nantahala and Cascades Releases (NC)
DESCRIPTION:Each year Duke Energy releases various ideal boating flows into the Cascades and Upper sections of the Nantahala River on eight days each year: one weekend in April\, one weekend in September\, and four weekday afternoons in the summer. American Whitewater and our affiliate clubs negotiated these releases in the early 2000’s and meet with stakeholders each year to schedule the releases and address any issues. These releases provide water in a Class III+ section and a Class V section of the Nantahala River. Parking is an issue\, so paddlers are encouraged to use a shuttle service or park well off the the paved road. The April Saturday release is at 250cfs\, The April Sunday release is at 350cfs\, the summer afternoons are at 250cfs\, The September Saturday is at 300cfs\, and the September Sunday release is at 425cfs from 10am to 3pm\, and 250cfs from 3 to 5pm.

For a release to occur whitewater boaters need to notify Kaukauna by email or telephone no more than 30 days prior to and no later than 10:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time the Friday prior to a scheduled release for flows to be released into the river channel for whitewater boating. \nWhitewater releases are provided in accordance with the following flow criteria: \n\nNo release is required if the river flows calculated at Rapide Croche are below 3\,000 cfs.\nWhen river flows at Rapide Croche are between 3\,000 to 6\,000 cfs\, all flows will be diverted to the bypass\, and Badger Hydro will be shut down.\nWhen river flows are above 6\,000 cfs at Rapide Croche\, Badger Hydro will have one or two units on line in an attempt to maintain a 6\,000 cfs release to the bypass.\nOne to two days prior to the scheduled release\, KU will make an estimate of flows for the weekend\, in consultation with the USACE\, and determine which of the above scenarios will apply. This information will be posted on our website.\nKU will not monitor the releases with an on-site presence.\n\nTo make a request\, the email notification must be sent to both ops@ku-wi.org and zmoureau@ku-wi.org to request the release. If you choose to make a telephone notification\, you must call KU System Operations at (920) 766-5988 and select option 4.

Additional boating opportunities may occur outside of this boating release schedule. Minor tuning to this release schedule may occur in order to accomodate Moke Race Flows which have not yet been determined upon. Any changes will be reflected within the AW release calendar. \nPhoto Credit: Emma Musgrove
