River Description

Quick Facts:

Location: EastCentral Wisconsin, on the South edge of Plymouth, flowing into the Sheboygan River just upstream of Sheboygan Falls.
Character: Generally flat and flowing water (through farmlands, lowlands, and woods), interspersed quite regularly with shoals, creating very mild swiftwater, riffles, and rips.
Shuttle Length/DriveTime: 8 miles/13 minutes.

Put-in elevation is approximately 800'.
Take-out elevation is approximately 665'.
Thus total elevation change is approximately 135 '.
Drainage area at our listed put-in is approximately 55.8 sq.mi. (as calculated via USGS StreamStats Beta software). By our listed take-out, it has increased to 79.6 square miles (43% increase).

GAUGE NOTICE: The entirety of Sheboygan County has just one USGS gauge, on the Sheboygan River. Flows in this section of the Mullet may be about 1.5 times the 'virtual gauge' for the upper section of this river . You should expect that this virtual gauge will lag both on the rise and fall, and may also not correlate well when rains hit different parts of the watershed disproportionately.

Run Detail

We have no first-hand experience (nor any reports, as yet) about this section. All info presented here is gleaned only from aerial views and topo maps.

The Mullet has much lower gradient through this stretch than in the prior described section. As a result, rather than the fairly continuous riffles, rips, and rapids the prior listed section has, the overwhelming impression on this section will be of a fine pastoral float, occasionally punctuated by shorter areas of riffles and rips.

If you have paddled this section, please help out your fellow boaters with comments (especially if you also have photos or video!) about this run, especially if you can provide any particular highlights or an

Put-in: Drainage area: ~56 sq.mi.

Drainage area at our listed put-in is about 56 square miles (as calculated by USGS StreamStats 4.0 Beta software). By our listed take-out it has increased to about 79.6 sq.mi. (an increase of ~42%).

Notes:

The miles of river between the upper section and this section appear to be generally much less interesting. Aerial views do not show any shoals, and do appear to show many areas of heavily wooded shores, giving rise to many areas of deadfall and snags. In addition, there are significant areas of slackwater, including one pond backed up by a dam (which would need to be portaged). For these reasons, we do not recommend nor include those intervening miles, but resume with this section.

Short Cut Road

Distance: 0.254 mi
Other
Short Cut Road

As you pass under Short Cut Road, you will encounter railroad tracks (on river-left). The river will weave back and forth a bit, but never stray too far from the tracks for nearly a mile.

Opening rips

Distance: 0.31 mi
Other
Opening rips

Right out of the ponded area from the put-in, you will be greeted by a fine shoals which should provide swiftwater for much of the first quarter-mile.

CTH.PP

Railroad Trestle

Distance: 1.18 mi
Other
Railroad Trestle

Some decent shoals (riffles) just downstream will quickly diminish into broad flat/flowing meanders in a lowland floodplain.

Low bridge?

Distance: 2.24 mi
Hazard
Low bridge?

A private bridge appears to span the river (trail access from a home to property across the river). It is possible/likely that (at least at some flows) this may be a hazard to navigation, requiring either ducking under or (at higher flows) portaging around.

Pleasant View Road

Distance: 2.77 mi
Access Point
Pleasant View Road

This may be a fine alternate access (if road shoulders are adequate for parking). Just downstream, a small island splits the flow, and it appears there should be a fine shoals, likely providing some swiftwater splash.

Hwy.57

Distance: 3.58 mi
Other
Hwy.57

As the river heads toward Hwy.57, additional light rips are likely to be encountered. You'll have about a 200' tunnel to pass under this divided highway. Very swiftwater appears to lead into this area, and it is possible wood may hang up and block part or all of the entrance. It could be a very good idea to attempt to scout this (if you can pull aside on Hwy.57 southbound lanes) before putting on anywhere above here!

High-Tension Lines

Distance: 4.11 mi
Other
High-Tension Lines

The first of what will be a number of crossings of the right-of-way under major power lines (for anyone doing the full section as listed here).

Low bridge?

Distance: 4.37 mi
Hazard
Low bridge?

Another private bridge spanning the river. As is very often the case with private bridges, one should expect there to be significantly less clearance than under road and highway bridges. Especially at high flows, you may have to duck or even be prepared to portage!

Willow Road

Distance: 5.07 mi
Other
Willow Road

The shoulders here do not appear to provide much opportunity for parking (based on aerial view -- maybe first-hand observation may prove otherwise), so this may be only a 'way point' (and possible emergency-only exit).

Ford

Distance: 6.85 mi
Other
Ford

There appears to be a ford (low-water crossing through the river) at this point, accompanied by minor shoals downstream.

Shoals

Distance: 7.48 mi

Shoals

As you round a sharp left-hand bend you'll encounter an area of shallows/shoals.

Footbridge or ?

Distance: 7.82 mi
Other
Footbridge or ?

Aerial views seem to show a bridge at this location ... possibly a footbridge? (Looks less substantial than some others.)

Shoals

Other
Shoals

As the river heads toward CTH.M it appears to encounter some areas of shoals or otherwise rocky stretches.

CTH.M

Distance: 8.11 mi
Other
CTH.M

The river crosses CTH.M immediately adjacent to CTH.PP. The rocky shoals which began upstream of this crossing continues a bit downstream.

Powerline Crossing

Powerline Crossing

As the river heads to cross under the double set of powerlines again, it encounters first a drive-through (ford) of the stream, then a private bridge. Immediately thereafter, the river turns abruptly left to cross back under the powerlines again.

Other
Ford

Another drive-through (ford) in the river.

Powerline Crossing

Distance: 12.92 mi
Other
Powerline Crossing

This one is just a minor powerline, not the double high-tension lines encountered numerous times before.

Bypass?

Distance: 13.38 mi
Other
Bypass?

Aerial views appear to show a narrow bypass channel which could be fun ... or not. If not passable, the main channel swings left and heads into backwater behind a small dam (almost certain a portage) to then drop into the final stretch of swifts, through numerous hairpin turns as it wends its way to the bridge under Old CTH.PP (and our listed take-out).

A very short distance downstream, the Mullet ends as it flows into the Sheboygan River about 1.3 miles upstream of the dam at the head of the short but sweet (big drops!!!) section in Sheboygan Falls.
