The center channel has a large branchy tree down, impossible to get around and difficult to portage with the thick growth. We had to paddle back up river. Not easy. The channel on river right has some wood but easy to get around. The channel on river left has a large tree across near the end of the channel. This tree has been there a long time and is collecting other wood. Be alert. It might be possible to go under the trunk but there is wood there too. The right channel was best on 7/18/2023.
There is construction at the covered bridge in Gilbertville, which is just below the rte. 32 bridge. Heavy steel cables are strung across the river under the covered bridge, about 1-2 feet above the water. They are attached to jersey barriers on either river bank. One cable has pink flagging on it but the others have none. One could easily clothesline oneself here. Not sure if there's a safe takeout above the bridge so you could portage, or if you'd have to take out at the landing above the rte. 32 bridge 1/4 mile away. It might be safe to put in below the covered bridge if you don't mind starting in fast moving water. Hopefully this is a temporary obstacle that will be removed after whatever they are doing there is finished. (Unless the stimulus money funding it runs out half-way through. :) )
ONn 12/6/09 we ran the river in open canoe. The cables had been removed and the river was clear of obstacles.
