The ripples in the water coming over the main dam are caused by vertical splines sticking up from the lip of the dam (the first reason not to run the main dam). Water falls off the lip to hit and sheet across a 'splash block' (the second reason not to run the main dam -- you'd slam hard onto this splash block). Coming off the splash block, water hits a dam-wide pile of large rock rubble to reduce or eliminate scouring of the riverbed (the third reason not to run the main dam, and why there is no play possible or recommended at any flow across the main dam).
