River Description
This (no doubt) falls largely into the 'stupid boater tricks'/'mini-creek' category. While en route between Madison and Baraboo on a day after heavy rains, crossing over this creek on Highway 12, we saw it was booking along and looking like fun! Upon returning home, I zoomed down to it (on Google Maps) to find its name and do some analysis. Well, the 'numbers' seem to bear out what we saw. Adequate size (drainage at listed put-in in the vicinity of 10 square miles . . . adequate to get boatable flows at least a handful of days a year) and decent gradient (about 100 feet of drop in about 2 miles, 50 FPM) suggest that it could be worth an 'exploratory expedition'.
We have no awareness of any actual runs, nor whether it is reasonable to do so. Most of the detailed length is quite wooded, meaning deadfall and snags could be a serious hazard. On something this small, there will be few eddies (especially when its running full), and low bridges, downed trees, or fences spanning the river could be difficult or nearly impossible to avoid.
Indicated put-in and take-out locations may not be workable. Other access points may need to be found. (Indicated put-in is an apparent bridge on private property. Permission would have to be obtained to use this location. Any put-in upstream would have the concern of whether it is possible to pass under, or whether there is slack water and reasonable banks to be get out and get around this bridge.)
IF this is actually feasible, it has the advantage of being only 6 miles from the 'park and play' at the Prairie du Sac dam, so if you 'get skunked' on Roxbury, you may at least be able to 'salvage' your trip by heading there for what it has to offer.
So . . . anyone ever done this creek? Or at least looked at it (in person)? Help out your fellow boaters with a comment or report!
River Features
USGS sampling site
USGS lists a sampling site (nearly a mile upstream of our 'hypothetical put-in') with drainage area of 9.3 square miles.
This location may prove at least as likely a put-in/access point, either from the road, or (with permission) parking at the St. Norberts Catholic Church to carry across a ball field which backs upon the creek.
