River Description
Climb over the wooden fence at the end of the road leading to the fish hatchery. You can either seal launch off the rocks right below the dam or put in a bit farther downstream. There is often a surf wave just below the seal launch that can be caught on the fly.
Over the next half mile there tends to be alot of fisherman but they tend to thin out farther down the run. The run is pool drop and stays at a constant difficulty throughout with 15-20 class II-III rapids on it. There are a couple pourovers sprinkled in below the Capilano Suspension Bridge. If it has been raining many waterfalls pour off the cliffs on both banks of the river.
All rapids can be boat scouted easily. Logs do tend to collect in unusual spots on this river so be sure to be on a constant look out above rapids. As of the fall of 2009 there was a riverwide log jam in the middle of the rapid right above the Capilano Suspension Bridge. At most levels it can be ducked on the right.
There is an alternate take out just under the route 99 bridge. If you do not have 2 cars it is possible to park along Capilano River Road just under the bridge and take the bus up to Cleveland Dam. From there it is a short walk down to the fish hatchery.
Below this takeout the river opens up a bit. 3 or 4 more rapids take you to the Park Royal takeout.
