River Description

Put-in elevation: something just under 740'

Take-out elevation: something just under 660'

Total drop: ~80'

This is a narrow stream, with pretty heady, steady gradient, through a heavily wooded area. Expect to have to deal with overhanging branches, deadfall, and snags as you are rushed downstream on this run. A single large branch (or full tree) can block the whole stream. We strongly recommend walking the trails along the run before putting in, to be aware of areas where safe passage may not be possible, and to be confident of your skills to negotiate or get out before problems!

Local paddler Jason Tharp provides:

Ross Run flows through Hathaway Preserve east of Treaty Creek. This small creek will only have boatable flow for a very limited time after a good rain. There are trails that follow Ross Run as it makes the drop towards the Wabash (use the trails to scout and hike back to the parking lot after your run). The left bank is the Preserve and the right bank is private property (and is marked with no trespassing signs). There is one waterfall of about 5 feet.

A video of his run is available via YouTube. (You may wish to skip forward to 1:55, where the action picks up.) Pay particular attention at 7:07-7:50 to the potential for problems negotiating trees!

Thanks, Jason!
