River Description

The put-in is marked on topo maps as 'Boat Ramp', and 'Fishing Site#1'.

The take-out is marked on topos as 'CAMPSITE'.

Various marked rapids (unnamed, at least on maps) plus a couple named rapids and a named falls (really much more of a chute/rapids) populate this stretch.

Expect this to be a flatwater trip, punctuated by (mostly brief) areas of rapids. (But, then, doesn't that describe so many Upper Midwest whitewater rivers?)

Thus, drainage at our put in should be a good bit over 100 square miles.

First Narrows

First Narrows

About 3/4ths of a mile of lake paddling should bring you to a narrowing with buildings to each side. It appears there may be (or may have been) some sort of earthen dam here. Expect a very brief wave train.

Second Narrows

Class: IIDistance: 1.9 mi
Other
Second Narrows

More lake paddling gets you to another narrows. This one will be a bit wilder (no buildings flanking it -- lots of trees), longer and more interesting (actually a two-parter, with a small pause in between) before it again yields to lake paddling.

Third Narrows

Class: IDistance: 2.53 mi
Other
Third Narrows

A house on a bit of a point, right before an island is the signal you're at the third narrows. Much less interesting than the prior one, this has mere riffles and rips.

Fourth Narrows

Class: IIDistance: 2.85 mi
Other
Fourth Narrows

Passing a house river-left on this pond gets you to the next narrows. This is longer than the others, and builds to a nice finish.

Fifth Narrows / Chipmunk Falls

Class: II+Distance: 3.16 mi
Other
Fifth Narrows / Chipmunk Falls

A brief pond (again, with a house river-left) brings you to the next narrows. This one is a very short drop, but could be somewhat more interesting! While 'Chipmunk Falls' is generally marked on maps a bit downstream, I believe this is the actual location. Don't let that get you too excited, though -- it's not really that much of a 'falls', more just a quick chute.

NOT Chipmunk Falls

Distance: 3.66 mi
Other
NOT Chipmunk Falls

'Chipmunk Falls' is marked at this point on various maps. While there is a bit of a narrows, there is absolutely no falls or rapids in evidence here -- barely more than a riffle. Again, I believe the 'falls' is actually a half-mile upstream.

Net River Road

Class: IDistance: 4.57 mi

Net River Road

More lake paddling (a few 'narrows', but none have any real rapids) brings you to Net River Road at a spot where the river narrows significantly. There may be a brief wavy rapids as you pass under the bridge. Also note that some online mapping mislabels the river from here down as 'Paint River'. Rest assured, you are still on the Net.

Flatwater paddling.

"Snake Rapids"

Class: IDistance: 6 mi
Other
"Snake Rapids"

Depending on the level of zoom, 'Snake Rapids' is marked/labeled just about here. There is precious little in evidence other than minor riffles and rips. (Not any more than most of the initial 'narrows' we have listed, none of which managed to merit a mention on the online maps!)

Snake Rapids (really)

Class: IIDistance: 6.5 mi
Other
Snake Rapids (really)

I'm betting they are once again about a half-mile off on their label. This narrows holds a much more interesting looking rapids. (Again, nothing major, just more significant than where they have it labeled.) As you reach the next ponding, your take-out will be on river-left. The remaining ~2.7 miles to the Paint River are generally flatwater.
