River Description

Deer Creek feeds both the old abandoned and new Sedan City Lakes. There is a rather nice gorge that flows between the old Sedan City lake and the New Sedan City Lake. As with any creek in limestone country the water often flows underground during dry seasons. In order to hit this creek, you will need serious high water with local floods. This is due to the fact that small lakes slow the flow of water by hours to days and can buffer local stream flows. If other creeks like those at Elk Falls and Butcher Falls are raging, then Deer Creek is possibly running. The put in is just past the low water ford on the access road. The creek flows through a shallow rock garden and then plunges off a 10-15 foot waterfall into a pool followed by a short S turn and a second waterfall-ledge. From here the canyon runs down to New Sedan City Lake. There are some class II slides and rocky spots but most of the action is 100 to 150 yards at the top of the run. Continuing all the way ends with a lake paddle out. The big drops can easily be lapped from the river left hiking trail. The river right is private property so please avoid that.
