I've ran a portion of this river and enjoyed it several times. We usually putin at the low water bridge on Coggins Mine Rd and takeout either at the end of Forest Service Rd. #555 on river right or at the 109 bridge. At the 109 bridge there are narrow shoulders and a path on river left on the Troy side of the bridge. A paddlers gage is visible beneath this bridge; look for about 1.8' for a minimum in solo boats. A USGS gage is also visible on river right downstream of the 109 bridge. 1' level on the paddlers gage comes close to 1.90'. Dutchmans Creek further which feeds into the Uwharrie further down can give one an idea (on the web) how the local area is faring. A very rough idea. Also it may pay to look at the Little (near Star) River (also on the web). Both of these two USGS gages are on the NC USGS site. Hope this helps someone else enjoy the Uwharrie.
