River Description
Saar Creek present a rather unique whitewater opportunity on the edge of Sumas Mountain. The creek is near a Reese Hill Road but it is a steep gorge so the road is far above the whitewater. The creek is small, requires a large sustained rain event, and access is far from optimal. The rapids are mostly caused by rocks fallen from the edge and bedrock ledges. As with any similar whitewater creek do not boat anything on this stream without visibility or you will end up swept over one of the numerous medium to large drops that might not be boatable for a variety of reasons. Giving a rapid rating is hard, because the difficulty on tight rarely-run creeks is difficult to assess, since some drops are un-runnable for a variety of reasons but might in fact be Class II drops under other circumstances. In 2024 there were a lot of trees, a few manmade structures including a bridge that picked up some debris, and some drops were simply not boatable but might be depending on higher flows. Westergreen Rd is listed as an access point but my experience was to quickly and carefully carry down from Reese Hill Rd. There might be access issues here but if you are quick to get off the road you probably will not be noticed. The takeout is on the right of way on Reese Hill Rd. As just an additional note it is obvious to anyone driving shuttle that you might not be in the best area to leave a vehicle for very long.
