Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportGreat trip. A little scraping, I definitely wouldn't run below 3 ft. I ran from Chapman's Landing to Burnshire Bridge. All the rapids were manageable (class II or less) and the scenery and wildlife was superb, expecially bordering Massanutten Mtn. and the GWNF. I caught a snapshot of a mink (didn't realize we had minks in the area), watch a band of 5 wild turkeys fly across the river (didn't know they could do that), and watched 2 female cardinals get in a fight over a male. There were two portages, both on river left. The first was around a hydrodam turbine. There are a lot of no trespassing signs posted, but I think they were specificially for the building housing the turbine, not for the actual portage route. Judging by the fact they had a very nice dock for the portage, I belive this assessment to be accurate. The second portage also had many no trespassing signs posted from a gun club, however, if you float all the way down to where the dam meets the shore, there is a skinny and very steep (some bouldering required) little portage route that should work just fine, though it will require some formidable strength and climbing to make work. Overall, a fantastic section, and I'd love to do the rest sometime soon.
