River Description
The Wheatfield Fork of the Gualala River offers paddlers an astonishingly beautiful, serene journey through the rugged landscapes of Sonoma County, California. Spanning approximately 35 miles, this tributary converges with the South Fork Gualala River near Sea Ranch, ultimately flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
There is no gague on the Wheatfield Fork, and the gauge on the South Fork is below the confluence. They are usually flowing at a very similar CFS, so you can half the gague to estimate the flows on either fork. CACREEKS had the max flow at 1200 (so ~2400 on the gague) but it definitely goes with WAY more water than that. Please post a trip report if you paddle this section so we can get the flow correct.
Paddling Overview:
Upper Section (Wolf Creek to House Creek): This 2-mile stretch is rated Class II+, featuring moderate rapids suitable for intermediate paddlers. You can put on Wolf Creek just above the confluence and float through a tunnel, which is fun.
Middle Section (House Creek to Clark's Crossing): An 8.7-mile segment characterized by gentle Class I+ waters, making it ideal for beginners and those seeking a relaxed journey.
Lower Section (Clark's Crossing to Annapolis Road Bridge): Extending 9.3 miles, this portion maintains a Class I rating, offering a tranquil paddling experience amidst the wilderness.
Optimal paddling conditions typically occur after significant rainfall, as the river relies on seasonal precipitation to maintain adequate flow levels. Paddlers should be prepared for potential obstacles such as logjams and strainers, especially during higher flows.
