River Description
A unique run in the SF Yamhill drainage with easy access. The run doesn't look much good from the shuttle, aside from a couple of intriguing ledge drops, lots of visible wood doesn't help the cause. However once on the water the quality is actually better than it looks from the road, and the wood not as bad. Scout as much as you can from the shuttle, as some of the rapids and ledges are more difficult to scout from the water.
Put in at the confluence with the WF Agency Creek, or downstream where the small valley ends and enters a narrow rapid alongside the road: 45.14996804144956, -123.68807909416356
Take out at the Wind River Culvert: 45.11138729684968, -123.62784519555592
Paddlers might shoot for the Salmon River below Slick Rock gauge to be somewhere around 1,000 cfs give or take a couple hundred for a first time trip, but that's not a tried and true gauge.
River Features
WF confluence
The put in is at the confluence with the West Fork, or anywhere between there and the first rapid at the end of the gravelly section.
Wind River Culvert
The take out is at, or just upstream of where the Wind River passes under the shuttle road through a culvert.
Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportMy wife and I ran this creek Dec 13, 2025, gauges were as follows.
SF Yamhill @ Willamina around 1,500 cfs
SALMON R BL SLICK ROCK CR around 750 cfs
Willamina Ck around 600 cfs
We were happy with the flow for a first time run, a little low but runnable. Most of the rapids and wood hazards could be seen on the drive up. We had to walk around only 2 logs and do a partial portage of one ledge (due to wood) despite a dozen or two logs issues visible on the shuttle.
The run was more enjoyable than it had looked from the road, and would be worthwhile for class III-IV boaters if the wood situation improved, or if those boaters were ok dealing with some wood and willing to portage if needed.
Scouting trip Dec 11, 2025. This was a great looking flow if you knew the run was clear of wood, any more water and I'd call it high. Flows were dropping from higher flows the day before.
S YAMHILL R NR WILLAMINA around 3,500 cfs
SALMON R BL SLICK ROCK CR around 1,800 cfs
WILLAMINA CR NR WILLAMINA around 1,200 cfs
