River Description
Stony brook is a small steep stream located in southern NH. If you are thinking of getting into steep creaking then try Stony brook as one of your first excursions. The two toughest drops, Broken dam and Funnel ledge, can easily be portaged. Stony brook has many 2 and 3 foot ledge drops in a small river channel. It is a very short run that can be done over several times. Most of the drops are located out of sight from Rt 31 which parallels the stream. Stony Brook is a popular trout fishing stream in the Spring so look out for dangling fishing hooks from the low branches especially on the lower parts of the stream.

River Features
Put In
Broken Dam
This is the first big drop. Get out and scout on what remains of the dam. The dam is made out of large rock slabs and concrete. There is a break on the left side of the dam. The water drops approximately 3' vertically then another 3' over a 30' distance as it curves from left to right. This channel is very narrow even in high water. What makes it more difficult are a pair of boulders in the middle of the channel halfway through. These force the paddler to the outside wall. Always scout this drop since debris occasionally lodges in the channel. Boat scouting is difficult because it drops steeply around the corner of the dam. Immediately below the dam there is a small 2' ledge under the railroad bridge.
1st Ledge
A 2 foot ledge that can be boat scouted. There is a second 1 -2' ledge 25' below this one. Look for horizon line just downstream from the railroad bridge.
Hidden Ledge
This is the biggest regularly run drop on the river. It is about 3' to 4' high. It cannot be seen from the road. Once the river turns away from the road look for a horizon line. Get out on the left and scout. Some people can boat scout this ledge.
Funnel Ledge
When you view a small foot bridge crossing the river with a couple of small buildings on the left , get out and portage the next drop. The river squeezes down to about 1-1/2 boat width then plunges 8 feet into a shallow rocky runnout. At higher levels you may be able to sneak on river right. Drop over a trashy 3' ledge, take a sharp left and immediately down another 4' slide that breaks to the left towards an overhanging ledge. Stay right here to avoid being stuffed under the ledge. Once you enter the main stream again take a hard right to avoid slamming into the left wall of the gorge.
