River Description

This section of the West Branch Ausable is a very scenic paddle, with most of the run feeling remote and sheltered from roads and development until the final mile. A few hunting camps can be seen along the way, but otherwise the river corridor feels wild and quiet. It is typically paddled in the spring and after heavy rains, when flows are sufficient to connect the longer stretches of moving water.

Put in on river-right just below the dam in Wilmington. The run begins with continuous, solid Class II rapids for about two miles down to the Haselton Road bridge. Below the bridge, the rapids gradually ease over the next mile, eventually transitioning into quickwater. After a couple miles of easier paddling, the gradient and difficulty begin to build again, with rapids increasing up to Class III. The former Rome Dam site features a fun rapid where a hole can form, and paddlers should stop and scout as needed. Downstream, the river continues with a short stretch of Class III+ followed by another mile of Class III and II/III rapids to the confluence with the East Branch in Au Sable Forks. Take out at the river junction in the town park on river-right.

Rapid

A hole can form at the former Rome Dam site, so be sure to stop and scout before running this rapid. The Rome Dam was a concrete structure on the West Branch of the Ausable River near Au Sable Forks, originally built in the late 1800s (and later rebuilt in the 1930s) to supply water and mechanical power for the J. & J. Rogers pulp and paper mills that once drove the local economy. After the mills closed in the early 1970s, the dam was left unused and gradually deteriorated, eventually raising safety concerns and limiting the river’s natural function. The Town of Jay approved its removal in 2017, and the dam was taken out in late summer and fall of 2018, restoring a free-flowing channel through the gorge and improving habitat and connectivity for the river system.

Just ran this section at about 3.50 feet, great fun- be careful at the 35ft dam carry. The 'V' shaped slot is not exactly canoe friendly. In addition, at the top of the slot is a huge patch of poison ivy. Putting back in after the dam is also extremely difficult, as the river narrows quite a bit. The only way down is buy walking down two old ladders. yikes... I opted to take out and walk to my car in Ausable Forks.
